THE BASICS

TYPES OF LIGHTING DESIGN

Within architectural lighting, the types of projects range from small-scale to entire campuses + facilities. Although the principles of light are the same regardless of the industry, different design types require different applications. A corporate building lobby could have ceilings double or triple height, while a jewelry case will only require light to travel a short distance.

The knowledge base and application of architectural lighting fixtures differs from theatrical or event lighting; though the skills are easily translatable with the understanding of basic lighting principles.

Residential Lighting has a high degree of focus on detail and lighting integration into architectural features. These projects lean towards customization and soft lighting that prioritizes comfort.

Retail and Hospitality Lighting may also use some of the techniques and applications as theatrical lighting, but on a limited scale and timeline. These projects (specialized retail, hotels, restaurants, spas) are generally concept-heavy and denote special attention to details of materiality and color.

Archi-tainment Lighting has the closest association with theatrical lighting. This type of design works in fields with semi-permanent installations, such as entertainment parks, cruise ships or special exhibitions.

Commercial Lighting refers to corporate office buildings, big-box retail, and chain restaurants. These projects may use moments of specialized lights, but tend towards modular units with a high degree of function.

Industrial Lighting provides layouts for large unspecialized spaces, such as processing or storage centers. The fixtures used in this type of lighting have a high output and minimal aesthetic concern.

Healthcare Lighting is a growing category in the midst of a technological revolution. New biological applications of controlled light are being discovered regularly. In addition to having distinct technical conditions and applications, the quality of lighting in a healthcare setting is of utmost importance. These fixtures will prioritize high color rendering and diffuse, bright ambient lighting.

Campus and Facility Lighting can constitute any combination of all of the above categories.
