Spivey Jean is a Los Angeles based lighting designer and artist.
In her work as a professional architectural lighting designer, she has gained direct experience with high-end residential and commercial projects by working with industry-leading firms.
First sparked by the phenomenological work of Yves Klein and art of Dan Flavin, Spivey is drawn to the individual perceptions regarding the value and the role of light within our personal constructs of a space. She has a particular interest in the interaction of light and material and how this interplay is represented both digitally and physically. She finds a natural fit in lighting due to the field’s dual emphasis on creativity and technical savvy, and she is known for her distinct musings on the discourse of light, space, and art.
In her design philosophy and in her work, Spivey translates abstract themes into practical elements through a considered and thoughtful approach. She is currently fascinated with the opportunities presented by RGB lighting, visual color mixing and the possibilities of expanding upon the Monza method.
Prior receiving her MFA from Parsons School of Design, Spivey held a decade-long career in Fashion with a specialization in Sales/Operations for start-ups.
She is a member of the IALD, IES and is the Financial Leader of Women In Lighting + Design LA Chapter.
